South of Gdansk
As our collective called Atelier Ways (see instagram link below) we took part in an urban competition for a new central district concept in Gdańsk South. We were awared an ex aequo 2nd prize for our proposal "Hearth of the South".
Our design strives to create an urban, dense, and mixed-use environment on a challenging and complex site characterised by loosely defined urban fabric dispersed around major infrastructure lines. We designed this area from an eye-level perspective to inject human scale and experience into a highly car-dependent context.
The jury commended our proposal for its clear urban structure, anchored by two distinct axes: cardo - a N-S axis of citywide importance, linking a mobility hub to a future Southern Park and decumanus - an W-E axis that reaches out to the neighbouring residential areas. The concept was further praised for its well-defined urban edges and the thoughtful transition between dense urban forms and more open blocks near the park.
The competition's outcome will play a vital role in shaping the local zoning plan. The competition was organised by the City of Gdańsk, endorsed by the Association of Polish Architects, and held under the patronage of the Landscape Architecture Association.
