Photogrammetry

photos.jpg

While there are plenty of websites that provide high-quality, 3d scanned people, I've seen the most popular models appearing over and over again even in the highest budget images. I think dramatically generic 3d models can drag too much attention from the actual image, so to avoid that I decided to expand my 3d library and include some custom models in it.

Photoscanning is a fairly straightforward process yet quite time consuming, especially since I wanted my model to be fully rigged and usable in animations.

The process involves making two sets of photos - one for the head, that needs much more detail, and one for the rest of the body. Then, the photos are analysed and transformed into a 3d model using an open-source program Meshroom. Finally, I clean up the model in Blender, make any necessary corrections, lower the polygon count and create a rig.
